AIPPI is pleased to join other IP organizations around the globe in celebrating World Intellectual Property Day 2021.
On April 26, the focus is on the role of small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in the economy and how they can use intellectual property (IP) rights to support their businesses. A recent report by the European Patent Office (EPO) and the European Union Intellectual Property Office (EUIPO) shows that companies which own at least one patent, registered design or trade mark generate on average 20% higher revenues per employee than companies which do not own any of those intellectual property rights (IPRs).
Speaking about the topic for this year's World IP Day, the AIPPI President, Luiz Henrique do Amaral, had the following to say, "SMEs are a crucial source of innovation, generating employment and growth for economies. The proper protection of their IP rights allow them to secure their market value, invest in their expansion and monetize their intellectual assets."
He further noted that, "Governments and international organizations should promote mechanisms to subsidize and support the IP protection of SMEs, so that one day they may become a solid and large corporation."
