Scott Burwell

Finnegan, Partner (US)


Scott Burwell is a partner at the intellectual property law firm Finnegan, Henderson, Farabow, Garrett & Dunner, LLP. He focuses his practice on Hatch-Waxman litigation, as well as other pharmaceutical and biotechnology-related disputes. He has broad experience in all facets of litigation, including post-grant proceedings before the Patent Trial and Appeal Board, bench and jury trials in federal district courts, and appellate practice before the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit.

Scott regularly publishes and lectures on issues of patent law.  He has been an adjunct professor at Howard University School of Law for more than a decade, teaching patent law and public policy courses.  Scott has served as a faculty member of the National Institute of Trial Advocacy’s Building Trial Skills and Deposition Skills programs.  He has also served as an advisory board member of Bloomberg BNA’s Pharmaceutical Law and Industry Report and is on the board of directors for the Washington Lawyers’ Committee for Civil Rights and Urban Affairs.

Scott serves on the Finnegan’s management committee and previously served as the hiring partner for the firm’s Washington and Reston offices.  He remains heavily involved in diversity and retention initiatives.

Scott graduated from Amherst College with degrees in biology and economics, and he graduated cum laude from Harvard Law School.  He is admitted to practice in Virginia and the District of Columbia and before the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office.
