Victor Portelli

IP Australia, General Manager - Patents and PBR Group (AU)


Victor has been a member of the Executive team at IP Australia since 2007 and is currently the General Manager of the Patents Chemical, Plant Breeder’s Rights and Electrical Group. The Group has a staff of approximately 220 whose main role is to search and examine Patents and examine and register Plant Breeder’s Rights.

Victor joined the Patent, Trade Marks and Designs Office in 1988 as a trainee patent examiner, examining patents in pure and applied chemistry. Prior to taking up his current position, Victor ran the Designs section where he led the introduction of the new Designs Act. Victor then transferred to the Trade Marks and Designs Group and facilitated the introduction of new customer product for self-represented trade mark filers, TM Headstart.

Victor has participated in numerous international fora and has chaired the Patents Cooperation Treaty Working Group. Most recently, Victor has undertaken a Jawun secondment working with an Indigenous organisation in the West Kimberley region of Australia.

Victor loves sport and spends his spare time coaching children’s basketball and soccer goal keeping.
