by Bartosz Krakowiak (President of the Polish Group)

Following a long-lasting tradition of joint regional AIPPI meetings, in March 16-17, 2017, the Polish, the German and the French Groups of AIPPI organized a trilateral seminar on selected intellectual property related issues. The seminar was held in Warsaw, Poland, at the famous hotel Bristol.

The seminar was officially opened by the AIPPI President Hao Ma and the Presidents of each organizing National Group (Bartosz Krakowiak of AIPPI Poland, Jochen Bühling of AIPPI Germany and Eléonore Gaspar of AIPPI France). The key speakers of the seminar were Andrzej Pyrza, Vice-President of the Polish Patent Office, and Kamil Kiljanski, Chief Economist of DG GROWTH (European Commission).

The main topics of the seminar were discussed by expert panels composed of the representatives of each organizing National Group and invited guests, including several AIPPI Bureau Members and AIPPI colleagues from Russia (the Group’s President) and Ukraine. These topics were:

  • General topic: Damages in IP infringement matters (calculation methods and liable persons)
  • Patent topic: Patents and regulatory issues
  • Trademark and design topic: The notion of functionality in trademark and design matters
  • Copyright topic: Copyright issues related to architecture and construction
  • Unitary Patent and Unified Patent Court in the context of Brexit
  • Russia and Ukraine IP updates

Altogether, there were 120 attendees from all over Europe, as well as from Asia and the Americas. The seminar coincided with the AIPPI Bureau’s visit to Poland and was followed by the Bureau’s own meeting in March 18-19 (held in Warsaw for the second time in AIPPI’s history).

It was also announced by the French Group of AIPPI that, in order to keep the tradition, the next joint seminar would most likely be organized in 2 years in Paris.
