Speakers
Dr. Koen Bijvank
Koen Bijvank is a partner at Brinkhof in Amsterdam, the Netherlands. He is qualified both as an attorney at law (‘advocaat’) and as a Dutch and European patent attorney. He specializes in international patent litigation and oppositions before the European Patent Office. His practice mainly involves patents in the areas of life sciences and pharmaceuticals. Koen is the chair of the Standing Committee on Patents of AIPPI and co-founder and past-president of EPLIT, an association of European patent litigators. He is also a member of the editorial board of the BIE, a leading Dutch journal on intellectual property, and a tutor at CEIPI in Strasbourg, France where he teaches candidates for the qualifying examination for European patent attorneys. Koen holds a master’s degree in organic chemistry of the University of Groningen, the Netherlands and a LLM and postgraduate certificate in intellectual property litigation of Nottingham Law School in the United Kingdom.
Tilman Pfrang, LL.M.
Tilman Pfrang, LL.M. is a German and European patent attorney as well as a partner at Meissner Bolte. He holds master’s degrees in both physics and law and brings extensive experience in national and cross-border IP litigation, with a particular emphasis on nullity proceedings and opposition work before patent offices. His clients are primarily active in the fields of materials science and mechanics.
As a representative before the Unified Patent Court (UPC) with a specialization in revocation actions and EPO oppositions, Tilman has played a key role in shaping IP legal practice. Within the first month of the UPC’s operation, he filed its first-ever action as lead attorney and is currently involved in several ongoing UPC cases.
In addition to his legal practice, Tilman serves as Vice-Chair of the Litigation Committee of the epi. He authors a weekly blog focused on UPC developments, co-hosts the bi-weekly podcast UPC Insights, and is a regular guest on the epi’s monthly podcast series discussing UPC case law.
Dr. Thierry Calame – Moderator
Dr. Thierry Calame is Lenz Staehelin’s managing partner based in Zurich and is an expert in intellectual property matters with a particular emphasis on patent law. He has vast experience as counsel in patent and other IP litigation, as well as IP-related arbitration. He regularly sits as an arbitrator in IP-related arbitration. Thierry also advises on licensing, the intellectual property aspects of other transactions and pharmaceutical law, including regulatory and advertising issues. He has a master’s degree in both chemistry and law, and is a permanent lecturer at the Swiss Federal Institute of Intellectual Property. Thierry has published on a wide range of intellectual property topics. He is a member of the Advisory Board of the European Patent Lawyers Association (EPLAW) and a past president of EPLAW. Thierry is also Co-Chair of the Committee on Unitary Patent / Unified Patent Court of the International Association for the Protection of Intellectual Property (AIPPI). From 2010 to 2014, he acted as Reporter General of AIPPI. From 2018 to 2022, Thierry was also a member of the board of Innosuisse, the Swiss Innovation Agency.
