Justice John Nicholas is a Judge of the Federal Court of Australia based in Sydney. He graduated from the University of New South Wales in 1982 with the degrees of Bachelor of Arts and Bachelor of Laws. He was a solicitor until 1987 before he commenced practice at the New South Wales Bar. As a barrister he practised in the areas of commercial law and intellectual property law. He was appointed Senior Counsel in 2001 and to the Federal Court of Australia in 2009. Since then he has heard a wide range of intellectual property cases at trial and on appeal mostly in the areas of patents and copyright. These have included some of the leading Australian cases concerning the legal liability of internet service providers and search engine providers, and the patentability of isolated genetic materials and business methods.
