Dr. Walter Oppenhoff

Rechtsanwalt Dr. Walter Oppenhoff, Member of Honour of AIPPI since 1985, died in Cologne on 4 February 2001 in the 96th year of his life.
Dr. Oppenhoff was an attorney in Cologne for more than seventy years and he became one of the great old men of the German legal profession. As a person he was of unwavering honour and dignity, he was upright, independent and faithful.
He was a successful lawyer; under his guidance his law firm developed into one of the largest in Germany. In his professional carrier he became President of the Deutsche Vereinigung für Gewerblichen Rechtsschutz und Urheberrecht, the German Association for Industrial and Intellectual Property Law, and Vice-president of the German Group of AIPPI, and he held these offices for thirteen years. He was President of Deutscher Anwaltsverein, the German Attorneys’ Association, Member of the Advisory Committee of the German Ministry of Justice for Industrial and Intellectual Property Law and Chairman of the section Business Law of the International Bar Association.
Walter Oppenhoff’s advice was sought in the whole field of commercial and business law but his main interest was the law governing the protection of industrial and intellectual property. His merits in the field of German intellectual property law were recognised by the grant of the Rudolf Callmann Medal of Honour in 1981. He actively supported the work of AIPPI. Among other things he greatly contributed to the success of the AIPPI Munich Congress of 1978.
He will be missed by all his friends and colleagues.
