Dr. Oppenhoff was an attorney in Cologne for more than seventy years and he became one of the great old men of the German legal profession. As a person he was of unwavering honour and dignity, he was upright, independent and faithful.

He was a successful lawyer; under his guidance his law firm developed into one of the largest in Germany. In his professional carrier he became President of the Deutsche Vereinigung für Gewerblichen Rechtsschutz und Urheberrecht, the German Association for Industrial and Intellectual Property Law, and Vice-president of the German Group of AIPPI, and he held these offices for thirteen years. He was President of Deutscher Anwaltsverein, the German Attorneys’ Association, Member of the Advisory Committee of the German Ministry of Justice for Industrial and Intellectual Property Law and Chairman of the section Business Law of the International Bar Association.

Walter Oppenhoff’s advice was sought in the whole field of commercial and business law but his main interest was the law governing the protection of industrial and intellectual property.
