With great sadness we announce the passing of Dr. Ernesto O’Farrell, honorary partner and former chairman of the Board of the Firm, which occurred on September 10, 2012, in the City of Buenos Aires, at the age of 82.

Ernesto O’Farrell joined Marval, O’Farrell & Mairal in 1954 and acted as Chairman of the Firm from 1990 till 2002 when he retired. He was one of the main architects of the Firm in its current structure, building the bridge between the founders and all of us who work at Marval today.

He was one of the best known and highly respected professionals in the field of Intellectual Property and Corporate and Business Law in the last half century. Author of the book “Transferencia de Tecnología: Ley 21.617” and of a wide range of articles on intellectual property and business law topics published in local and foreign law reviews, he was also a frequent speaker at national and international forums. He was President of the Argentine Group of the Association Internationale pour la Protection de la Propriété Industrielle (AIPPI), deputy member of the ICC International Court of Arbitration and advisor to the Cámara de Sociedades Anonimas and of the Universidad Argentina de la Empresa. He was president of the Buenos Aires Bar Association for two consecutive terms between the years 1991 and 1995 and chaired the Argentine Association of Industrial Property Agents from 1998 to 2000. He was also a member of the following associations: the Associação Brasileira da Propiedade Industrial (ABPI), the Inter-American Intellectual Property Association (ASIPI), the Intellectual Property Rights Association, the International Law Association, the Inter-American Bar Association, the International Bar Association, the International Trademark Association (INTA) and LES International. In all of these associations he was highly regarded and appreciated.

Ernesto exceptionally combined natural talent and striking virtues in both public and private life. Those of us who had the privilege of working with him will always remember him as a fair man, generous and considerate to others by nature, a thorough professional with acute intelligence and an extraordinary ability to communicate his ideas with clarity and precision.
