Lauma Buka is a policy officer and trade negotiator at the European Commission, Directorate General for Trade – Intellectual Property Unit. The Directorate General for Trade of the European Commission is in charge of implementing the common trade policy of the European Union, including commercial aspects of intellectual property rights. Lauma Buka has been working for the IPR Unit of DG Trade for more than 3 years and is currently the lead IPR negotiator for EU – Japan Free Trade Agreement. She is also involved in the negotiations of IPR Chapter of Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership Agreement (TTIP). In the past Lauma’s portfolio in DG Trade IPR Unit included also Russia, Ukraine and a number of Asian and Central Asian countries.

From 2006 till 2010 she worked in the Office for Harmonization in the Internal Market, dealing mostly with trademark opposition cases. Immediately prior to joining OHIM, Lauma Buka spent 5 years at one of the leading IP and law firms in Latvia, where her duties included advising clients on a wide range of trademark issues.
