Karsten Koeniger is a German attorney and partner with the law firm Harmsen Utescher in Hamburg, Germany. He is a patent litigator, with a particular focus on pharmaceuticals. He has been representing clients in both patent infringement and validity proceedings with regard to second medical use claims. Karsten studied physics and law at the universities of Heidelberg, Freiburg and Munich. As a research assistant and PhD student at the Max Planck Institute for Intellectual Property in Munich, Karsten became aware of AIPPI’s role for the international development of intellectual property law. Today, he is the vice president of the German group. Before joining Harmsen Utescher in 2004, Karsten gained practical training in the patent department of a technology company, a patent law firm in Japan, the Berlin High Court and as a legal intern with the Honorable Pauline Newman, Circuit Judge, U.S. Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit.
