Chief Judge Ryuichi Shitara graduated from the Law Faculty at Tokyo University. From 1979 until 1983, from 1986 until 1990 and from 1993 until 1997 , Judge Shitara served at the IP Division of the Tokyo District court. From 2001 to 2005, Judge Shitara served at the IP Division of the Tokyo High Court and in 2005 he assumed the role of the Presiding Judge in the I P Division of the Tokyo District Court. From 2008 to 2009 he served at Tokyo High Court and moved to Niigata District Court as a chief judge. Judge Shitara was called to become the Presiding Judge of the Tokyo High Court in 2011 and moved to become the Presiding Judge of the Intellectual Property High Court in 2013, and ascended to Chief Judge on June 15th in 2014.
