Moderator in Panel Session IX – Patent – The UPC – Brexit or business as usual?
Tuesday, September 20, 2016 from 08.30 to 12.30
Alan Johnson is chair of AIPPI’s Unitary Patent / UPC committee and a partner in Bristows’ LLP, London. He has been following the proposals for the creation of what we now know as the Unitary Patent and UPC since 1999.
In his capacity of Chair of the IP committee of Brussels-based American Chamber of Commerce to the EU (2001-2005) he was closely involved in discussions with the European Commission in relation to its first proposals for a Community Patent.
Subsequently, Alan was appointed as a member of the UK IPO’s European Patent Reform Consultation Group whose role was to comment on and guide the UK Government’s position in relation to the dossier. He continues to advise the IPO on an ad hoc basis, and was involved in the IPO’s consultation on the UPC Rules of Procedure in 2013, as well as representing UK industry’s IP Federation at the Trier consultation on the draft rules in November 2014.
